The marine renewable energy sector is facing a very exciting and critical time. In the global race to meet decarbonization goals, renewable energy will play a critical role – and marine renewable energy offers unique solutions for both climate change and building a sustainable blue economy.

Marine Renewables Canada is the national association for tidal, offshore wind, wave and river current energy, with a membership of technology and project developers, suppliers, utilities, Indigenous organizations, researchers, and communities.

Since 2004, we have been working to drive growth of the sector and ensure that thoughtful solutions are developed to support future development. This includes strong communications, outreach and education initiatives. We’re a small team – we have fun working closely together and we’re proud of what we continue to accomplish!

Our main priorities are:

  • Advocating for supportive policies
  • Developing domestic and international business development opportunities for our members
  • Facilitating collaboration amongst our membership and the broader ecosystem
  • Getting the word out about marine renewable energy through public education and outreach
  • Building Canada’s marine renewable energy sector by disseminating market intelligence
  • Catalyzing opportunities for marine renewable energy to contribute to achieving decarbonization goals via the production of green fuels like hydrogen & the displacement of diesel in remote communities and other marine industries.

THE POSITION

As the marine renewable energy sector and our association continue to grow, we are looking for an enthusiastic and innovative communications and event coordinator to join our team!

The Communications and Event Coordinator will assist with Marine Renewables Canada’s communications, education, and events. This role will have the opportunity to support far-reaching communications initiatives and events aimed at increasing knowledge of marine renewable energy and the potential it holds for contributing to a clean energy future and decarbonization goals. The Communications and Event Coordinator will gain hands-on experience using their communications skills to help increase public knowledge about marine renewable energy, support our members’ business development efforts, and ultimately help facilitate sector growth.

This is a dynamic opportunity for someone who is passionate about getting involved in renewable energy and eager to play an important role in realizing Canada’s marine renewable energy opportunity.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop digital/social media content including the creation of written and graphic materials for a variety of the association’s digital platforms.
  • Help manage MRC’s social media calendar and engagement, including collaboratively developing original posts and campaigns.
  • Assist with managing website content and updates.
  • Assist in the writing of communications materials such as fact sheets, newsletters/bulletins, summaries for events/workshops, promotional materials, website, and members’ briefing materials.
  • Work with team members to conceptualize and implement communications strategies and campaigns.
  • Ensure that all communications and promotional material align with brand standards.
  • Assist with the development, delivery and administration of events (ex. annual conference, workshops, etc.), major projects, initiatives, and trade missions as needed.

DESIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience and/or strong interest and understanding of, communications, public relations, and event coordination.
  • Minimum 1-2 years relevant experience (can be combined education and professional)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience managing social media channels (ex. Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram)
  • Experience using graphic design and video editing tools (ex. Canva, Adobe Premiere Pro, InDesign, Illustrator)
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage time efficiently
  • Fluency in English is essential. French is an asset
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada
  • Not currently enrolled in full-time post-secondary studies

TERMS & WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This position is ideal for someone in their early career who is looking to transition into the renewable energy/electricity sector for the first time and gain substantial professional experience through communications and event coordination. 
  • This is a full-time term position, beginning as soon as possible and ending February 29, 2024, with the possibility of an extension.
  • As a Halifax-headquartered organization with a national scope, we are committed to ensuring members and initiatives across Canada are supported and advanced. Therefore, we are ideally looking for candidates based in Ottawa, British Columbia, or Atlantic Canada. We will ultimately base selection decisions on the best fit for the position.
  • Compensation will be based on skills and experience. Marine Renewables Canada offers a compensation package including flexible working hours, vacation, and additional paid time off over the holidays in December.
  • This is a remote position, offering flexibility to those who thrive working from home, but excel at developing and maintaining productive working relationships with their team. The successful candidate must have a suitable working location/home office as well as access to a computer, printer and office supplies.
  • Occasional travel within Canada will be required.
  • Additional hours, or time outside of the normal work hours, may be required in order to meet operational requirements of planning and delivering specific projects and events at specific times of the year.
